Jensen Beach at a glance
Jensen Beach is a community of 12,652 people (2020) in Martin County, along the Indian River Lagoon north of Stuart.
What that means for pests
Homes near the lagoon and its mangroves see plenty of mosquitoes and no-see-ums after rain, while older cottages have their share of termites and palmetto bugs; see mosquito control. Homes on the barrier island side of the lagoon catch salt air and storms, while older inland cottages are often wood framed.
Waterfront living
Docks, boats and outdoor storage near the water give roaches and spiders places to hide. Boat storage, kayaks and outdoor furniture under the house make good shelter for roaches and spiders.
The Pineapple Capital
John Laurence Jensen, an immigrant from Denmark, set up a pineapple plantation here in 1881. After the Florida East Coast Railway arrived in 1894, the town shipped over a million boxes of pineapples a year and was called the Pineapple Capital of the World. A hard freeze in 1895 and fires in 1908 and 1910 hurt the growers, and by 1920 they had turned to citrus. Fruit trees still grow in many yards, and fallen fruit draws roof rats; see rodent control.
